How to Care for Your Oriental and Persian Rugs
Oriental and Persian rugs are among the most desirable and expensive floor coverings. Each is handmade and while durable, there are many considerations to take to ensure they are preserved and optimally cared for. This is especially important if your rugs are antique as well. Cameo by Copeland Cleaners have been cleaning and restoring the prized floor coverings of New York’s elite for over 90 years and offer these tips for maintaining your rugs at home. The three most important maintenance tips to follow are: regular vacuuming, avoiding direct sunlight, and professional rug cleaning. In NYC, this means consulting with Cameo by Copeland Cleaners to arrange for the pickup and delivery of these treasured possessions. Here are our detailed Oriental and Persian rug tips:
Vacuuming:
Ensure that your floor coverings are thoroughly vacuumed at least once a week to prevent direct and debris from embedding in the fibers. Be sure to use a vacuum that has its beater bar turned off or can be set for a high pile. Then vacuum across the width of the rug (sideways) to prevent distorting the pile and stretch the rug out of shape. Every few months, flip the rug and vacuum the underside to remove dirt that has settled under your rug, then place right side up again.
Avoid Direct Sunlight:
Drapes are your Asian rugs’ best friend. Direct sunlight causes permanent damage. Not only will it fade the vegetable dyes used to create the colors, but also it can degrade the woven framework supporting the tufts of pile underneath. Be sure to rotate your rugs periodically to ensure even fading, as over time, these rugs will fade.
Spot Cleaning:
It is not a substitute for professional rug cleaning. In NYC, consult with Cameo by Copeland Cleaners’ Oriental and Persian rug experts before you attempt to clean a stain from your rugs. Blot any spills at once using a clean cloth or paper towel. Test any cleaning solution we suggest in an inconspicuous area first, as the age and materials used to dye the rug are a consideration as to how thoroughly a stain can be removed. Do not use commercial carpet cleaners from the supermarket or big box store. These are formulated for synthetic fibers and are too harsh for use on organic dyes, natural fibers and handmade materials.
Use a Rug Underlayment:
A natural fiber rug pad, such as wool felt, will protect your rugs from wear and tear. This is especially important if your floors are stone or wood.
Moth Prevention:
Consider moth repellents or treatments if your rugs are made from wool or silk.
Never Sweep Your Rugs:
Brooms are taboo as these can destroy carpet fibers.
